Former US Defense Secretary William Perry, who served as North Korea’s policy coordinator when tensions rose on the Korean peninsula in 1999, diagnosed that the three-step diplomatic solution to North Korea’s denuclearization still was in force.

He said he will meet with President-elect Biden next month and propose the appointment of a North Korean coordinator.

A video conference was held between Jeong Se-hyun, senior vice president of the Advisory Council for Peace and Democratic Unification, Unification Minister Lee In-young and former US Defense Minister William Perry.

This is a place to gather wisdom about the direction of North Korea’s policy when the US presidential elections are over and the peace process on the Korean peninsula must be restarted.

When tensions on the Korean peninsula peaked in 1999 with the North Korean launch of the Daepo-dong missile, former Minister Perry, who made a three-step plan for the denuclearization of North Korea by visiting North Korea as coordinator of United States policies, called the Perry Process, said: Although the situation and progress were different from that of the time, it was diagnosed that the diplomatic solution for the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula is still in force.

He stressed that Korea and the United States must jointly create an advanced denuclearization and peace process.

Vice President Jeong Se-Hyun also sympathized with this, noting that a more advanced roadmap for peace and denuclearization is needed on the Korean Peninsula, such as the ‘Ferry Process 2.0’. He said it would strengthen him.

As a result, Perry promised to suggest that he needs to appoint a special coordinator for North Korean policy, saying he is scheduled to meet with US President-elect Biden next month.

At the Peace and Unification Forum organized by the PyeongTong Democratic Party, it was pointed out against the Biden administration that the Korean government should pursue faster and more proactive diplomacy with the United States regarding North Korea’s nuclear program.

It is noteworthy whether the official and informal movements that unfold along the US diplomatic and security lines after the US presidential elections can lead to visible results.
