Alopecia has been confirmed to be included in the physical examination failure criteria at the Naval Academy, and is noted to be anachronistic.

The Navy clarified that no applicants were removed due to the regulations, but said it would review the regulations to verify their suitability.

These are the Naval Academy application guidelines for next year.

One of the main criteria for failing a physical is “hair loss.”

No specific body part was mentioned, and cases with symptoms of hair loss of “more than 30% of the total area” were defined as rejection.

In the ‘Naval Health Management Regulations’, which is a physical examination standard for maritime entrance exams, grades are awarded according to the range of hair loss.

Furthermore, the Military Justice Law Enforcement Act, which is the basis for this regulation, classifies alopecia as a “psychiatric disorder”.

During the State affairs audit of the Navy, the Defense Commissioners pointed out that ‘alopecia’, which does not interfere with military service, was included in the criteria for disqualification of maritime affairs as anachronistic.

For this reason, the Navy explained that ‘alopecia’ included in the criteria for maritime disqualification refers to ‘general alopecia’, which is part of the disease, and that the male pattern of hair loss does not correspond.

In addition, even though there was not a single maritime applicant who was rejected for alopecia, he said he would actively consider improving regulations.

[김명수 / 해군사관학교장 : 관련 규정은 타 사관학교와 비교해서, 앞으로 해군본부와 협조해서 전반적인 규정에 대해서 재검토할 수 있도록 하겠습니다.]

Earlier, the Korean National Human Rights Commission in 2017 said that hair loss is a natural condition that people cannot influence, and refusal to hire for this reason was a violation of human rights.
