An elderly man in his 90s, who was imprisoned on a wrongful accusation on April 3 in Jeju, was found guilty of innocence through a retrial. This year’s grandfather, Kim Doo-hwang, 92, was framed and taken to the police more than 70 years ago. He was tried and sentenced to one year in prison for false confessions that he failed to overcome through torture and threats to shoot. Grandpa Kim requested a new trial after 70 years and was ultimately acquitted. This is the first conviction of innocence as a prisoner who was given a general trial on April 3. The judge said that the defendant consistently denied the charges and that the prosecutor responsible for proving did not provide relevant evidence. Furthermore, he consoled Grandfather Kim, saying that a 20-year-old was unfairly punished for using anti-government activities amid extreme ideology immediately after liberation. Grandpa Kim made no secret of his joy, saying that he had been released for 70 years.
