Classmates in their 50s who slept on a bus that was converted to camping died or fell in critical condition.
Police estimate it was caused by carbon monoxide poisoning.
Let’s connect with reporters and hear detailed stories. Reporter Na Hyun-ho!
First, let’s explain the scheme of the case.
[기자]It was last weekend that the accident happened.
Four high school students in their 50s went camping together in Yeosu and Goheung, Jeollanam-do.
Originally, a 45 seater bus was converted for camping.
However, on the night of the 13th, two families of the group received a report from the 112 police situation room.
The family who went camping complained that they did not answer the phone for 12 hours.
A police officer who was reported and dispatched found a bus with a group of students on an island called Geogeumdo in Goheung, Jeollanam-do.
When I knocked on the door of the bus, two people got up and the police explained what was reported and left.
One person who joined the group made contact with his family, and when he drove and moved, he felt a headache and vomiting.
So I checked the status of the rest of my friends.
It was in poor condition and I called 119 for first aid.
However, one of them eventually died and the other is still in critical condition.
And the two who got up earlier were also taken to the hospital and treated.
[앵커]You went on a trip with former students and had a sad accident.
By the way, was the reason they died or were injured suspected of carbon monoxide poisoning?
[기자]So is. They were found to have fallen asleep after drinking alcohol since the night of the 12th.
They didn’t wake up until 8 pm on the 13th, when the police found him.
One of the people in the group said that before going to sleep they turned on the “no-start heater” installed in the floor of the bus.
The citywide heater is a device that allows hot air to escape even when the bus is off.
Police estimated that the carbon monoxide generated by the city’s heater was inside the vehicle, causing an accident.
The windows of the bus were also confirmed to be closed and sealed when they were discovered.
[앵커]The police are currently investigating the exact cause of the accident, right?
[기자]The police focus on two things.
The first is how carbon monoxide got into the bus.
Police confirmed yesterday that smoke from under the vehicle was flowing into the bus during the identification process.
We plan to send the bus in the accident to the Noodle Tree to experiment under the same conditions as at the time of the accident.
The second is if the bus has been illegally modified.
The owner of the bus who was in the accident this time bought a used car on the 16th of last month, a month ago.
The police plan to investigate the owners of the buses and the companies that modified the vehicles.
Also, it is a policy to verify where the accidental bus was restructured and that there were no defects at that time by requesting the Transportation Safety Authority.
[앵커]Every winter, there are always accidents where people die while camping.
What should you watch out for to avoid an accident?
[기자]Like you said, accidents of being addicted to carbon monoxide while camping are repeated in winter.
In January last year, 5 members of a family in Goheung, Jeollanam-do, were injured while sleeping in a camping bus.
The most common cause of an accident is poor ventilation.
This Goheung camping bus accident was also closed with all the windows closed.
It is also known that there were no detectors that would indicate the generation of carbon monoxide.
In recent years, in the wake of Corona 19, the so-called ‘blow’ is a trend that goes to a travel destination and solves accommodation by car.
In particular, motorhomes are also constantly increasing.
In 2014, only 125 campers were converted.
In 2019, five years later, it increased to 7,900 units.
However, heating is essential for camping in winter, which is why accidents due to gas poisoning occur during this process.
Experts say that complete ventilation and equipped with carbon monoxide alarms are of the utmost importance.
