Toxicity was also confirmed in animal inhalation tests of liquid e-cigarettes, which the government recommended to stop using. Although the test results show that the component in question can have an effect even when it enters the human body, no case similar to the acute lung disease that occurred in the United States has been confirmed in Korea. This is reporter Lee Jung-mi. Liquid e-cigarettes in the US have caused deaths from acute lung disease. Additionally, in ingredient testing conducted last year, six of the seven ingredients identified as suspected substances for severe lung disease were detected in e-cigarette liquid distributed in Korea. This year, we conducted tests on cells and animals. In cell tests, it was confirmed that two types of solvents and three types of flavoring substances decreased the viability of cells. Animal inhalation studies in rats found respiratory toxicity when vitamin E acetate was administered. Vitamin E acetate is a component that the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has selected as a substance that causes lung damage. Tobacco smoke was also tested and as a result of the test it was less than liquid, but five suspected harmful ingredients and nicotine were detected. However, in domestic products, no ingredient was suspected above a certain concentration. Furthermore, in the investigation so far, no case of acute lung injury occurring in the United States has been confirmed in Korea. The Korean Centers for Disease Control and Prevention stressed that it is too early to determine if it is harmful, as it is a limited test performed with each component, and that more research is needed.
