To prevent the spread of Corona 19, major sunrise spots like Gangneung Jeongdongjin were closed.

Although cancellation tickets were issued, most of the trains bound for Gangneung and Pohang were sold out.

KORAIL expects 1,500 people to get off at Gangneung Station today.

There seem to be a lot of people going down to their hometown or going on a trip during the Christmas season.

If you look at the electronic board behind me, you will see a red letter that says ‘Sold out’.

Most of the trains to Gangneung and Pohang are also sold out.

Just yesterday all tickets were sold except for the morning train, but some train seats were empty in the middle as the cancellation tickets were issued in one day.

KORAIL explained that as of 2 p.m., 2,300 seats out of 2,900 seats for Gangneung were sold.

Of these, about 1,500 people are expected to get off at Gangneung Station today.

Compared to 5,800 people last year, this is a decrease of 74%.

As a result of special quarantine measures over the end of the year and the New Year holidays, the sunrise event was completely banned until midnight on the 3rd of the following month.

Sunrise spots like Jeongdongjin in Gangneung and Homigot in Pohang and national and public parks across the country have been closed.

Gangneung has decided to close all the beaches, but a thousand public officials plan to block the entrance.

Most tourists are expected to enjoy the sunrise at their accommodation.

KORAIL also stopped selling all Sunrise products and limited the number of tickets sold to 50% by allowing only window seats.

Normally, a train has capacity for 410 people, so now only 200 people can travel.

KORAIL explained that it did not reduce the number of flights in consideration of local residents, nor tourists, nor citizens who go down to their hometown.

Korea Expressway Corporation decided to install a fence on the outer deck of the Donghae Expressway main rest area to block access and shorten the hours of operation of restaurants and cafes.

It seems difficult to see the sunset and sunrise with your own eyes like last year.

Instead, local governments like Gangneung, Sokcho, Pohang, and Jeju Island also broadcast sunsets and sunrises live on local YouTube channels.

It is a difficult time for meetings and gatherings, so I think it would be nice to celebrate the New Year in a quiet environment this year.
