Over 30% increase in package delivery this year due to Corona 19
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport recommends courier companies to take measures to protect courier workers
Courier worker votes to reject classification … 95% or more in favor
About 4000 courier workers, “rejected the classification from the 21st”
As of 21, out of 50,000 courier workers nationwide, more than 4,000 courier union members are expected to refuse to sort packages.
The government and courier companies are discussing countermeasures, but if the refusal to work becomes a reality, the delivery of couriers during the Chuseok holidays is expected to be severely disrupted.
Reporter Kim Jang-ha reports.
[기자]Each year during Chuseok’s peak season, the delivery volume increases by more than 10%.
Specifically, the Ministry of Lands, Infrastructure and Transport forecasts that this year the volume will increase by more than 30% than usual due to the corona effect 19.
For courier workers already suffering long hours, this Chuseok holiday is scary.
This year alone, seven courier workers died from overwork.
The Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport held a meeting with the delivery company on the 10th and recommended measures to protect delivery people, such as increasing the number of people working on sorting packages.
However, effective countermeasures have yet to emerge.
The courier worker’s overwork countermeasures committee held a blanket vote to reject all parcel sorting jobs for three days starting on the 14th.
More than 95% of the courier workers who voted in favor of the refusal to work.
As a result, more than 4,000 courier workers nationwide plan to reject the sorting process as of the 21st.
If the government and courier companies fail to take appropriate countermeasures, a major disruption in delivery is expected from the 21st, primarily for Chuseok gifts.
The Countermeasures Committee is scheduled to hold a press conference at 9:30 am today in the KCTU assembly hall and announce the total refusal to classify the parcels and the position of the countermeasures.
