Eight courier workers have already died from overwork this year. The courier, who died after suffering hard work before and after the Chuseok holidays, worked 15 hours a day and carried 400 packages, but it was not applicable to work accidents. The parcel union raises the voice that it is urgent to improve the system. Reporter Park Hee-jae reports. A shipping agency of CJ Logistics. On the afternoon of the 8th, Mo Kim, a courier from here, collapsed and died during the delivery process. I didn’t have any special chronic illnesses in my late 40s. Kim’s father erupted in resentment that his son could not even eat due to a lot of work recently due to Corona 19, and even more suffering from heavy work around the Chuseok holidays. Mr. Kim worked six times a week for about 15 hours a day and only found 400 boxes a day. That’s about 30% more than usual. In this situation, the courier company passed short-term labor costs from workers to drivers to sort the boxes. I told the messengers to pay 400,000 won each. To avoid paying this cost, Kim got to work three hours before the other drivers and did the classification. He even lost his life in the middle of a serious overwork, but it cannot be recognized as a work accident. This is because the deceased filed a request for exclusion from workers’ compensation insurance last month. According to statistics from last July, 64% of the 4,900 employees of CJ Logistics and Kim requested exemption from work accident insurance. Management explained that there are many drivers who request to avoid paying premiums every month, but the Overwork Death Countermeasures Committee responded that it was due to pressure from the company to ease the burden of the premium. The committee urged management to apologize to the overworked person immediately and pay the consolation money to the survivors. He argued that there is an urgent need to improve the system to prevent blind spots from industrial accidents. Additionally, the Task Force will hold a commemorative period for the deceased workers for the next 15 months, calling for CJ Logistics to take responsibility and suspend delivery work on Saturday.
