There are already about 1,000 confirmed cases in the East Seoul Detention Center, and the sixth full test will be rerun tomorrow.

As the outbreak of mass infection increased in prisons, progressive lawyers and religious circles publicly questioned whether the government’s actions were appropriate and joined the ranks of the critics.

The spread of foot infections in the East Seoul Detention Center rarely fades away.

Six detainees who failed the fifth overall test tested positive again.

To date, the number of confirmed cases has already exceeded one thousand and is close to half of all prisoners before the outbreak.

While the number of confirmed cases increases rapidly with each full test, all prisoners at the East Detention Center are tested again.

It is already the sixth full test, targeting some 600 prisoners and employees who have been negatively determined by the fifth test.

As all confirmed triple-digit cases were confirmed in the first to fifth rounds, it is feared that not a few prisoners and employees will test positive this time.

Prime Minister Jeong Sye-gyun, head of the company headquarters, officially apologized for the misfortune of being the most confirmed individual facility, and Justice Minister Choo Mi-ae also posted two apologies on social media.

The Ministry of Justice belatedly introduced the third stage of distancing from prisons across the country, but confirmed cases continue in other prisons such as Jeju Prison.

Experts emphasized that the root cause of how the infection spread in the eastern detention center has not been found, emphasizing that cause analysis and epidemiological investigation should be conducted more closely.

The meeting of lawyers from a democratic society and the Korean Catholic Human Rights Commission launched public inquiries saying they would check whether the government measures were appropriate.

In addition to the guarantee of sanitary products and medical services at the facility, the government asked inmates to disclose specific information on nine matters, including guaranteeing the right to communicate with the outside world, the prohibition of unfair disciplinary actions and measures in case of a protracted situation.

These groups criticized the Ministry of Justice for not taking any clear action since the beginning of the crisis, except the external blockade, and that the follow-up measures were not disclosed in a transparent manner.

It is an assessment that the mass infection in the East Seoul Detention Center revealed the unfamiliarity of our society as a country with poor human rights in correctional facilities.

In particular, given that deaths have been tracked, the aftermath of the storm on the issue of liability is expected to be inconvenient along with the provision of follow-up measures once the situation has subsided.
