A woman in her 30s who killed her 3-year-old daughter with a blunt weapon was sentenced to 10 years in prison. Mr. A, a woman in her thirties who was put on trial for killing a 3-year-old girl who lived with her. The incident took place at Mr. A’s home around 3 p.m. on January 28, 2019. An assault began because the son of a man who shared the building pushed his dog. An hour later, the boy was taken to the emergency room with a depressed part of the skull and died within a month. Mr. A, accused of child abuse and death, was eventually sentenced to 10 years in prison and imprisoned. Referring to the findings of a forensic scientist, the court ruled that Mr. A killed the boy by hitting him several times on the head with a hard stick. He also noted that the abuse did not stop, knowing that hitting the fragile head of a 3-year-old would lead to death. This is where the judge partially admitted the intent to murder A. However, the prosecution only applied charges of child abuse and lethal to Mr. A, not charges of murder. It is noted that the prosecution needs a more proactive attitude from the moment of indictment, as interest in child abuse increased as a result of the ‘Jeong-in’ case. According to Supreme Court sentencing standards, child abuse and death is 4 to 7 years in prison, but murder is 10 to 16 years in prison.
