Some 80 dogs were rescued from an illegal slaughterhouse in Yongin, Gyeonggi-do, but there were reports that some of them had nowhere to send and stayed behind.

In the end, there are many voices that say they need to be euthanized, but they need a dedicated facility for rescued dogs.

Inside the dark green house

Traces of the massacre remain next to the so-called ‘float’ where the dogs were trapped.

At a glance, 84 dogs were rescued on the 12th of last month from this illegal farm, where hygiene is bad.

The owner of a business that was sold as food was accused of violating the Animal Protection Law and the Livestock Manure Law.

But even now, 20 days later, more than 20 swordsman dogs were unable to leave this place.

The rescued dogs remain confined just 20 meters from the place of sacrifice.

All quarantine measures include the placement of plywood so that the feet do not fall under the floats, and feeding and watering.

This is because there is no place to send.

35 small dogs have been moved to consignment facilities, such as dog hotels, but there are no facilities to accept large dogs like Tosa dogs.

Abandoned dog shelters operated by local governments are already overcrowded.

[용인시청 관계자 : 일반 유기견을 보호하는 것조차도…저희만 그런 게 아니라 전국에 있는 지자체가 다 그럴 거예요. 유기견 보호 시설이 다 포화 상태예요.]

Dogs rescued from illegal dog farms in Gyeyangsan, Incheon in July last year, are in a similar situation.

An animal protection organization built a temporary facility to protect 160 of the 280 who could not find a place to go, and an order was issued to demolish the facility.

The reason is that dog houses and greenhouses were installed in areas of restricted development.

There is also a way to send rescued dogs to a private stray dog shelter, but budgets like shipping costs are an obstacle.

Also, since most large dogs are difficult to adopt in Korea, they are reluctant to trust them even in abandoned dog shelters.

It takes about 6 months for the slaughterhouse dogs to receive treatment and education and find a place of adoption abroad.

For dogs that have not found a place to stay during this period, all that remains is euthanasia.

There are more than 280 animal protection centers operating throughout the country, but there are no facilities dedicated to handling dogs rescued from slaughterhouses or dog farms.

Some point out that rescued dogs need special facilities to protect them before adoption.

[전진경 / 동물권행동 카라 대표 : (구조된) 동물들을 수용할 준비는 전혀 안 돼 있어서 발생하는 문제거든요. 비용을 들여서라도 이런 동물들을 수용할 방법을 찾아야….]

Along with this, there are growing voices that the repression and punishment of illegal farms must be strengthened to ensure that no dog is seriously abused or euthanized.
