On the 19th, the special investigation team for the Sewol ferry disaster announced the results of the investigation for one year and two months and terminated its activities. The task force launched in November 2019 seized and searched 17 institutions and investigated 201 people, and managed to process 20 non-custodial individuals. The Blue House of the Park Geun-hye administration and the special investigation committee of the Sewol ferry disaster of the government ministries, 9 people, including the former Blue House policy coordinator Hyun Jeong-taek and Hyun Ki- hwan, a former political director, and the Marine Police Command, including former Maritime Police Commissioner Kim Seok-gyun, on charges of inadequate response by the Maritime Police Agency during the Sewol ferry disaster. Eleven people were handed over to trial.

However, the task force dismissed allegations of external pressure against the investigation team by Justice Minister Hwang Gyo-an and Blue House Chief Min Jeong-woo at the time, and alleged external pressure from Kim Ki. -chun against the auditor. The Park Geun-hye administration mobilized a security officer to inspect the survivors of the Sewol ferry, and it was said that it was not possible to confirm whether the report or order was made due to the death of former commander Kim Jae-soo.

It is difficult to describe the shock and pain that the Sewol ferry disaster, which killed 300 people, including the unfinished Danwon High School student, in our society. Even now, few people suffer that trauma. As this was a case with a tremendous shock wave, it appears that the prosecution did everything possible to investigate without prejudice or external pressure. However, the question remains whether the grieving family believes the prosecution’s announcement that “there was no external pressure or wake manipulation” as soon as possible.

The task force’s launch is intended to fully reveal the truth about whether there were any issues with the government response after the Sewol ferry disaster. However, the investigation into the suspicion of the operation of the ship’s DVR has been postponed to a special trial to be organized soon. There is no point in not completing the investigation correctly and hastily finishing the activity. Still, it is worthy of criticism that he has left a sensitive matter to a special prosecutor who will redo the investigation.

Even though 7 years have passed since the Sewol ferry disaster, it is the pride of our society that the truth has not yet clearly revealed. This is the result of the political use of uniform thinking and the field logic approach rather than scientific foundations. It is regrettable that the expectation for the investigation of the truth of the Sewol ferry disaster that was presented to the prosecution should again be the subject of a special process.
