Garak Market in Seoul, where fruits and vegetables from all over the country are gathered.
Selling agricultural products to retailers like supermarkets and restaurants, this market has more than 1,000 wholesale stores.
[도매 상인 – 마트 상인]“(That’s a much higher rating than this). Let’s do this. How much is this? (This is better. 23,000 won) (The price) is too high.”
However, as the situation for business partners like restaurants and funeral homes became more difficult, a cold snap also hit the wholesale market.
[유형선/도매상인]“I thought (Corona 19) would be caught in March and April, but it’s getting tough from the second half of the year.”
However, something more explosive happened.
The situation where the rents of some stores, which the city of Seoul cut in half in the last ten months since February due to the crown crisis, are returning to their original state.
The Seoul Agricultural and Fishery Food Corporation, which operates the market here, has notified that it will increase rent and deposit by 5% next year.
[유형선/도매상인]“(The government) tells the landlord to freeze the rent and increase the rent on construction, it is going to go backwards.”
The construction side said that from the beginning, the rent was low to the level of ‘preferential’, and that the damage to the market traders is minimal caused by Corona 19, so there is no problem.
[서경남/서울시농수산식품공사 농산팀장]“The transaction amount increased to 111% compared to the same period last year … (originally) We are receiving very low facility usage fees.”
This explains that the total amount of purchase of agricultural products by intermediaries is increasing, so the business is good.
However, the merchants protested that it was a sound that did not know reality.
[최혁/도매상인]“I’d like a visit to see how middle-aged wholesalers do business …”
It is true that the price of agricultural products increased due to the long rainy season, but profits were reduced.
[정인실/전국과실중도매인조합연합회 서울지회장]“People who deliver school meals, hotels and buffet restaurants (people who deliver) are wiped out.”
The situation is to increase both the rent and the deposit to the retail stores in Gangseo Market, Yanggok Market and Garak Market managed by the Corporation.
[이승연/축산물 상인]“It doesn’t generate more business. In that situation, it doesn’t make sense to increase the rent now.”
Traders are demanding the withdrawal of the increase, saying construction, which posted a deficit of 8 billion won last year, will raise rents to cover it.
