[앵커]Vaccination against COVID-19 in the United States is expected to begin soon. Distribution of the Pfizer vaccine has begun and will be shipped throughout the United States. The United States votes in favor of the election of the next president at the fourteenth local time. The dominance is that the electoral vote will also result in a confirmation of the victory of Joe Biden. Let’s take a look at the world news that came in overnight, reporter Kim Ji-soo. Welcome.
[기자]Good Morning.
[앵커]Over the weekend, US authorities reviewed Pfizer’s vaccination needs in an instant. Tell us about the situation so far.
[기자]The CDC of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, our CDC, has accepted the recommendations for the use of Pfizer vaccines, as determined by the Advisory Committee. In the US, the FDA and the CDC of the Food and Drug Administration must review the urgent use of a vaccine. As a result, work has begun on transportation to distribute the vaccine produced at the Pfizer plant in Michigan across the country. These first vaccines, which can be given to 2.9 million people, will be distributed across the United States by day 16, with the first vaccine expected to be delivered on day 14.
[앵커]If it goes according to plan, the vaccination is expected to start on day 14.
[기자]The director of the Food and Drug Administration, Stephen Han, said that the vaccine could be administered for the first time on the 14th. The primary vaccine distributed is an amount that can be administered to 2.9 million people and, although it is a decision In each state, healthcare workers such as doctors and nurses, nursing home residents, and staff are expected to be prioritized. These vaccines are shipped to distribution centers where they can be stored at -70 degrees Celsius and transferred to a designated vaccination site on a weekly basis so that they can be administered within three weeks. Montseff Slawy, chief of vaccine development at the White House, predicts that 100 million Americans will be vaccinated by the first quarter of next year and March of next year. He said he plans to distribute vaccines across the United States that can reach 20 million people by the end of the year. This is the combination of the Pfizer vaccine, which has begun shipping, and the Modena vaccine distribution, which is expected to be approved for use this month. The head of vaccine development also said that for the United States to build mass immunity, 75 to 80 percent must have immunity and expect to reach this point between next May and June. “It is important that the majority of Americans choose to receive the vaccine.” These comments appear to be made with a large number of Americans who responded negatively to vaccination in various surveys.
Meanwhile, foreign media reported that President Trump, Vice President Pence and other top administration officials will be vaccinated beginning on the 14th. Key White House officials and key government officials say they will be vaccinated within the next 10 days. Vaccination in the United States is 11 months after the first confirmed case on January 20 and 9 months after the pandemic began in mid-March. Looking at the COVID-19 outbreak, there are 500,000 new cases in the world. Globally, the cumulative number of confirmed cases worldwide is approaching 72.6 million. The cumulative death toll exceeded 1.6 million. The number of cumulative deaths by country was the highest in the United States at 306,000, followed by Brazil, India, and Mexico. It can be seen that Europe, Italy, the UK and France have the highest cumulative deaths after Mexico. The number of cumulative confirmed cases was 16.69 million in the United States, followed by an overwhelming number, followed by India, Brazil, Russia and France.
[앵커]The country with the most damage from Corona 19 is the Americans. We have vaccines before our eyes, but about half of Americans have expressed negative opinions about vaccines. For the US authorities, it seems the most urgent need for the public to have a positive knowledge of the vaccine. This time, let’s watch the news about the US presidential election. The United States held the presidential election on the 3rd of last month, but is going through another electoral process called a ballot on the 14th local time. Please tell me about this in detail.
[기자]Unlike ours, the US presidential elections adopt an indirect election method. In the presidential elections of the 3rd of last month, the electors of each state were chosen, not the president. The electors thus selected will vote on the 14th. There are 538 electors in total. This is the number of 100 senators and 435 congressmen, plus three voters from Washington DC. The size of the electoral body by state is determined largely in proportion to the population. Voters are assigned a winner-take-all base. Instead of dividing the electoral body by candidate according to the state’s vote rate, we are directing all the electoral bodies assigned to that state to candidates who have won even one vote. The exceptions are Main and Nebraska. In the past, electoral votes were not an attention-grabbing event, but this year it is seen as an important step in determining a rightful winner, as President Trump objected. The results of the weekly voting are compiled through the media and reported on the same day. After voting that day, it is virtually determined which candidate has finally secured how many electoral bodies. According to current state-by-state count certification results, of the 538 electoral bodies, biden-elect has insured 306 people, far outnumbering the majority of 270, and President Trump insured 232 people.
Of course, there may be cases where the electorate votes for a candidate other than the one who won the state. He is a so-called ‘cheater voter’. However, even in this case, it is not enough to reverse the electoral results. Once the electoral vote is complete, the United States Congress will hold a joint meeting of the Senate and the House on January 6 of next year to certify the results and determine the winner. Two weeks later, a new president is legally born after the inauguration ceremony on January 20.
[앵커]In the past, electoral voting was treated as a formal procedure, but this year, President Trump’s objection to the presidential election has emerged as a concern. I think I have to look. President Trump’s lawsuit against the presidential election was even dismissed in the Supreme Court. However, he said he repeatedly expressed disapproval.
[기자]In an interview with Fox News, President Trump made it clear that the results of the presidential election, which resulted in Biden’s victory, will continue to come to an end. When asked by the moderator, “Did the Supreme Court’s dismissal of the Texas lawsuit end the objection to the presidential election?” President Trump said, “It is not over. We will move on.” In this regard, reports have reported that Trump is interested in going after special prosecutors to investigate allegations of presidential fraud and Biden’s second son, Hunter. Previously, the state of Texas filed a lawsuit in the United States Supreme Court to annul the election results in Pennsylvania and the four contenders that Biden had won, which the Supreme Court dismissed.
In the midst of this, public opinion polls found that the majority of the American people believe that Trump’s lawsuit against the presidential election is weakening democracy. When Fox News surveyed 1,000 voters across the country through a polling agency earlier this month, 56 percent of those polled said they saw President Trump’s lawsuit against the election as a weakening of American democracy. More than half of those who oppose President Trump to run for president in 2024 are also more than half.
