Incheon School Car Accident Last Year … Inappropriate Seat Belt Controversy
Two-point seat belt crash test results in “high risk of injury”
“Request for a mandatory 3-point belt for children by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport”
Most of the seat belts installed on children’s school buses in Korea have a structure that only covers the abdomen.
However, as a result of consumer research, it was found that this type of belt does not properly fix the upper body in a collision, so the risk of injury is very high.
Our law does not even stipulate what type of seat belts must be installed on children’s school buses.
Reporter Cha Yoo-jeong reports.
[기자]In May of last year, two elementary school students in their cars were killed in a car accident at a soccer club in Incheon.
Speeding and traffic violations were the problem, but the so-called two-point seat belt fitted to the school vehicle was also controversial.
The two-point type that connects the two points on both sides of the waist only covers the abdomen, but if a three-point belt was used that supports the shoulders, it could prevent serious human harm.

I put the mannequin in the back seat and crashed it against the wall at 35 mph, but the upper body was not fixed, so it sticks out more than 70 cm in front.
The head hit the front seat and the impact caused damage to the rear of the front seat.
This results in a very high risk of injury.

After the controversy in Korea, it wasn’t until last year that a related bill was introduced, but ultimately it was not passed.
The Consumer Agency plans to request the Ministry of Lands, Infrastructure and Transport to force the installation of a three-point belt for children.
Furthermore, when he informed the school bus manufacturer of the results, he added that he received a response that he had recently started developing a children’s three-point belt.
