Kieran Tierney has explained why he broke giving the middle finger when an image of Arsenal players celebrating their victory over Manchester City was posted on social media.
Tierney, who hasn’t lost a national cup game that started since 2016, gave a compound performance when the Gunners beat City 2-0 to reach next month’s FA Cup final thanks to two goals from Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang .
A photo of Arsenal players celebrating in the dressing room was later posted on Twitter, with Scotland’s Tierney International giving the bird to the camera.
He then turned to Twitter to apologize, and a poignant gesture from the 23-year-old was soon won over by anyone who might have been offended.
That’s because he promised to give his night shirt to a cancer patient he had been watching from the hospital, after the fan responded to Tierney’s tweet suggesting that the middle finger may have been from his cancer.
After the image of the Arsenal locker room celebration was shared on social media, Tierney tweeted, “I didn’t realize this was being posted.
“It was a joke with Kitman. I am so sorry I caused someone an offense, it was not in any way.”
Fanatic Andreas Eikaasen got in touch and said, “Let’s just say it was for my cancer, buddy! A brilliant game today, made my night in the hospital,” along with two laughing emojis.
Tierney replied, saying, “That’s exactly what it meant to my man! Legend of U … get in touch. I’ll send you my shirt tonight. Keep fighting” with a heart emoji.
The followers of the former Celtic defender were impressed by the gesture, with one that said: “Pure class. Captain material.”
Another posted: “@ kierantierney1 is working to become a Legend at Arsenal again after reaching that status at Celtic. We love you.”
Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal will play either Manchester United or Chelsea in next month’s FA Cup final, with the other clash of the last four taking place at Wembley on Sunday night.
