Let’s (day) break it
There is a good chance that header is an emotional rollercoaster for many of you. Most probably do not remember that there is a new one Aliens game in development, and less will still have an idea what kind of game it is.
Those of you with steel-trap memories will remember that Cold Iron Studios announced in early 2018 that it was working on a Aliens title for PC and consoles. It’s a shooter, it is Aliens, and that’s all we know about it.
Today, Daybreak Games announced that it has acquired Cold Iron Studios, keeping this essential Aliens project from the brink of death. As GamesBeat describes, Cold Iron has had a tumultuous hand for a few years. It was owned by Kabam, and then sold to FoxNext Games in 2018. Disney’s acquisition of Fox in 2019 led to FoxNext being sold to Scopely. However, Scopely publishes mobile games and did not want Cold Iron in its portfolio. So, Daybreak finally bought the studio.
This one Aliens game may not have been a good fit for a portfolio of a mobile publisher, but is it a perfect fit for Daybreak’s? Cold Iron hat City of Heroes, Star Trek Online, en Neverwinter to his name, all MMOs. Daybreak has developed and published the likes of PlanetSide 2, DC Universe Online, H1Z1, Lord of the Rings Online, en EverQuest – all MMOs as strictly online games.
Those stars all focus in a way that really seems to make us get one Aliens MMO on PC and consoles. It should also be noted that although the original reveal was framed as “a shooter in the cinematic universe of the Stranger franchise, “Cold Iron has called her since Aliens match. That extra S fits into the offensive-heavy shooter theme, if Aliens is more action while Stranger is more suspense / horror.
There is still a lot to clarify about this. Hopefully, a new release means Cold Iron gets the stability it needs, and we haven’t waited three years for the next update. I just want to fight a nest for the Queen. Is that so much to ask?
