An Indian journalist died after the men he had accused of harassing his niece were shot in the head, according to police.
Vikram Joshi, 35, died on Wednesday, two days after being shot in the Ghaziabad district of Uttar Pradesh state.
Police arrested nine men in connection with the attack.
Her brother told the media that the police did not investigate Joshi’s complaint and that this allowed the men to plan the “revenge attack.”
The district police chief suspended two officers and ordered an investigation.
The attack, which was captured by CCTV cameras, has sparked outrage among Vikram Joshi’s colleagues and journalists across the country.
The images, which have been widely shared, show a group of men forcibly stopping their motorcycle and then hitting it before shooting it. His two daughters, ages 5 and 11, were with him.
After the attack, her oldest daughter can be seen sitting next to her, even when cars and people pass by.
Opposition journalists and politicians, including former Uttar Pradesh Prime Minister Akhilesh Yadav, have tweeted, questioning the state of law and order in Uttar Pradesh.
“People are in shock after this incident. The government needs to answer why criminals can openly ignore law and order in the state,” Yadav tweeted.
Several journalists gathered at the hospital and protested, demanding compensation for the family of the murdered man, local media reported.
The government accepted the lawsuit and also promised a job for one of his family members.
