The government’s intention to open the schools on January 8 was expressed by the Deputy Minister of Education, Sofia Zacharaki, in statements to SKAI and the TODAY program. However, final decisions will be made a few days before, if the Commission examines the data and “turns on” the green light.
When asked if secondary schools and lyceums would open at the same time, he said that if the Commission allowed it, “we would like both gymnasiums and lyceums to go back to school.”
Ms. Zacharaki reiterated that schools are not sources of infection. “The schools were very safe in relation to the rest of the citizen’s social action and we saw that the average number of departments that had to be closed by cases was 0.4-0.5%,” he said.
Regarding e-learning, he stated that the material progresses normally, emphasizing that “a great step has been taken in relation to the first confinement and this must be credited to the enormous effort of the teachers. “E-learning cannot replace what is done in the classroom, but it will continue to be a complement.”
For his part, the professor of Infectious Diseases, Nikos Sypsas, in a television interview pointed out that “the epidemiological data will show it on January 4 and 5 if the schools open. That is why we must all make an effort so that on those days the opening of schools is possible ”, adding that“ our priority is the opening of primary schools and the other educational levels will gradually open ”.
