Patient D. Dimitrios Koufontinas has been hospitalized in the ICU of Lamia General Hospital in serious condition since 02/16/2021 as a result of complications derived from a prolonged hunger strike (since 01/08/2021).
The medical staff of the ICU, continuing with the follow-up and intensive care, always in the context of medical ethics and respect for the beliefs and wishes of the patient, proceeded from today 03/14/2021 at his request, at the gradual beginning of feeding. and nutritional support for the patient, with the aim of reversing established disorders as much as possible and avoiding further damage to their health. The patient’s health status remains serious.
The strike was preceded by calls from organizations and collectives, which supported his just request to transfer to Korydallos, to stop his struggle after he had already fully highlighted the authoritarian and vindictive attitude of the government.
However, the government did not stop insisting on the cruel and even anti-legal attitude that mathematically led to the death of the prisoner.
Massive protests against the decision broke out daily, with many citizens demanding that Dimitris Koufontinas not become the first prisoner to die on a hunger strike.
It is characteristic that at the end of last week auras, chemicals and clubs were mobilized to disperse the protesters, but they were not intimidated and continued the fight.
