The pressure in intensive care units rises dangerously. Of the 70 beds for Covid in Attica, 53 have already been covered. Respectively in Thessaloniki, of the 43 beds, another 26 are free.

In the question, at the current rate of increase in cases, for how long the available beds are still sufficient, the concern is obvious. That is why the health system has indulged in a road race.

New changes in the organization of the country’s hospitals in terms of Intensive Care Units. Creation of new clinics that will attend only patients with COVID-19 who need a simple room for their treatment.

Such are the initiatives in recent days that set the tone for concern, as the second wave of the pandemic is at our doorstep. Efforts are focused on increasing the number of beds in Attica’s Intensive Care Units from 70 to 100, as well as creating new COVID clinics in large hospitals that have not been designated as pandemic disease notification hospitals, to cover a greater number of people who need a simple hospitalization. .

The Ministry of Health is strengthening the capacity of the beds that are available for virus patients, depending on the evolution of the pandemic in the country, but this time an effort is being made at the same time to cover the other diseases that afflict the patients. The design also includes the adaptation of the premises, so that there is as much isolation as possible from the rest of the patients who have been infected by the virus.

In total, there are 930 intensive care beds in the country, of which 229 are for coronavirus cases, while the remaining 701 beds are for other diseases.

Of the 229 ICU beds for COVID – 19, 6 are in military hospitals.

In Attica hospitals, all 53 ICU beds have already been covered for COVID, while in Thessaloniki 17 out of 43 beds have been covered, respectively.

The ministry plans to further strengthen the pandemic virus intensive care unit, with 236 new ICU beds through donations already made.

The director of the Intensive Care Unit of the Tzanneio Hospital spoke with the liberal about the adaptation of the ICU beds, Mr. Thanasis Prekates, who pointed out that the health system still lasts to cover the cases of the pandemic virus with the current situation.

However, the process of converting the Intensive Care Units into the ICU for the coronavirus has already begun and it is already expected that the 14-15 beds in Tzanneio will become 20.

A little later, they are expected to rise even further, to 24, thanks to a donation from the Niarchos Foundation. However, for this change, it will be necessary to remodel the facilities, separate projects and much more, the new beds will have to have additional staff, doctors, nurses, but also specialized physiotherapists, ambulances and other personnel.

Double epidemic

Noting that it is necessary to strengthen the Intensive Care Units with additional staff, because the massive pensions observed since last year have not yet been covered and the existing medical and nursing staff have been operating in emergency mode for a long time, he noted that The big problem will be created from late October to early November, when the epidemic wave of influenza will begin.

So it will be difficult to differentiate the diagnosis between flu and coronavirus, as both viruses mainly affect the respiratory tract, while at the same time showing similar symptoms.

Until then, however, the population can be covered, and in the meantime, epidemiology and restrictive measures will define needs more clearly.
