Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte today called “unacceptable” the lawsuit filed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan against the Dutch far-right leader, who posted a satirical sketch of the Turkish president on Twitter.
Rutte addressed Erdogan directly, in front of the television camera and in front of many Dutch journalists.
“I have a message for President Erdogan and it is very simple: in the Netherlands, we regard freedom of expression as the greatest asset and that includes sketches, including political sketches,” he said in a video broadcast on the Dutch state television channel NOS.
“So the man who calls me a fascist and previously called the whole of the Netherlands a fascist country and a remnant of Nazism is going to make accusations against me?” (He turned) the world upside down. It has failed! “He said.
Geert Wilders posted on Twitter on Saturday a sketch of the Turkish president, with a bomb on his head, accompanied by the word “terrorist.”
According to the Turkish state news agency Anadolu, Erdogan today filed a lawsuit against Wilders in Ankara, accusing him of “fascism.”
“A lawsuit against a Dutch politician, which could even lead to a restriction on freedom of expression, is unacceptable,” he said, adding that his views were transmitted to the Turkish authorities “through normal diplomatic channels.”
Marc Rutte was one of the first European leaders to side with French President Emmanuel Macron, who has been the target of personal attacks from Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who has called for a boycott of French products.
The lawsuit against Wilders “exceeds all limits,” Rute estimates.
