Why cases are not declining yet, the top three reasons

Two weeks of confinement and even the main indicators of the pandemic – number of cases, intubated patients and deaths from Covid-19 – remain at very high levels as shown in the latest EODY report, expected above, given the restrictive measures. Although there are some signs of stabilization, the situation remains extremely critical, as noted during yesterday’s briefing at the Ministry of Health.

There are three main reasons. As stated by Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases at the EKPA Faculty of Medicine of the University Hospital “Attikon” and member of the Expert Committee Vana Papaevangelou, the epidemiological burden is high, there are many asymptomatic cases that can continue without spreading. There is also a greater dispersion in the Region, except in Thessaloniki and Attica, which are the two main focuses of the last month.

“The unclear reduction of the epidemic wave, three weeks after the closure of northern Greece and two weeks after the implementation of horizontal measures throughout the territory, is cause for concern.

The truth is, based on last spring’s experience of the first national shutdown in March, one would expect a major recession. This is due to a series of factors that coexist with the high epidemiological burden that we have had to face. The issue is complex and complicated, ”he said.

“EODY analyzes the change in the average epidemiological burden in each Regional Unit per week. EODY data shows that there is some stabilization in Attica and northern Greece, while increasing trends continue in Thessaly.

“Unfortunately, as has been mentioned many times, patience is needed because the healthcare system will remain under pressure for at least a week or two more, in northern Greece and beyond, as the number of patients and intubated patients will continue to increase. “. finished.

The new data

Most diagnoses are still recorded outside of Attica and Thessaloniki, with clear exit points from the exponential rise. The burden is extremely heavy in the north of the country and the pressure has clear local elements.

Attica this week continued to improve with an even milder worsening of the epidemiological situation than the previous week and a greater contraction in the transmission rate of Rt. Thessaloniki maintains more than five times the epidemic burden in relation to Attica, indicating the high intensity of the over-transmission that it experienced in mid and late October. The transmission rate appears to have now approached Attica levels and the forecast points to further contraction.

Regarding age characteristics, the 40-65 age group consistently shows the greatest impact, followed by the 19-39 group that shows signs of stabilization at the levels expected for the population. The age group of children remains low, in the context of the relative impact observed during the pandemic.

However, the virus shows that it passed from the 20 to 30 age group in early November to the older generations, and this spread continues within homes.
