The coronavirus vaccine is coming, the pandemic is present and Christmas will seem like a thriller. How many cases will “explode” in mid-January?
All of this applies in one way or another to the whole of Europe or the whole planet, but in our country there are still some peculiarities.
These are not so much to be found in the increased traffic on the streets or in the fact that the citizens of Athens gathered on Saturday night to take a walk through the decorated Syntagma Square, if nothing had happened to you. Even with masks.
These peculiarities have to do with what government sources are spreading in recent days. Looking ahead to Christmas and New Year, they report, on the one hand, that for the first time there is some hope on the horizon, due to the vaccine, and on the other hand that there is great concern about the course of the pandemic in January and February .
Some scenarios, which are cited, such as the one published on Facebook a few days ago by the Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Crete, Achilleas Gravanis, describe a picture of nightmare, with 5,000 daily cases and between 10,000 and 15,000 shot dead.
In these circumstances, the government is concerned about the Christmas holidays and gatherings at home. Reasonable. Nine people will be able to legally meet there, based on what has been heard from the most official government sources, they will not wear masks, they will eat and drink and who knows what morning comes after them. Maybe what Mr. Gravanis says, maybe, and hopefully not.
However, the question is. Given that the concern is so great and the possible scenarios so nightmarish, why allow these meetings? Someone will say: “And how will the ban be controlled?” Could there be an answer “What you cannot control, it is better not to prohibit». And yet, to be realistic, something else could have been decided, more daring, but still more appropriate for the occasion: especially for the days and nights of Christmas and New Years to ban all kinds of gatherings, even movement, for example . from 5.00 to 6.00 in the afternoon onwards.
There could be a counterargument: “And how will this be controlled? “. Right. But first, experience has shown that a universal ban is easier to control and enforce, and second, it sends the right message.
All of this, as long as we worry so much about nightmare scenarios. Otherwise, we talk aimlessly.
It could also be argued that now the parameter will play the most critical role ever seen. “Individual responsibility”. A field in which, unfortunately, we have not done well so far πολύ
