More than 20 people, including young children, were killed in an airstrike Sunday during a wedding in an isolated desert area of central Mali, a health official said today.
It is not clear who is responsible for these attacks. However, a French military source told Reuters that French forces operating in Mali had launched an air strike in the area, killing “dozens of fighters” from Islamist groups.
The health official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the targets of the attacks were men driving motorcycles in the villages of Budi and Kikara, believed to be Islamist fighters. But among the victims are civilians who had gathered for a wedding. Some of the injured were mutilated at a nearby health center, he added.
According to the French source, the targets were identified from the air before the attack and from the ground immediately after.
France has deployed more than 5,100 soldiers to the region to help fight the jihadists. Five French soldiers have died in Mali in recent days.
