Varosia: how Turkey tried to block the Security Council resolution

[ad_1]

Cypriot diplomatic sources expressed their satisfaction with the position taken by the five permanent members of the Security Council in their interventions in the consultations on Friday, and especially with the position taken in the intense Turkish interventions. Turkey, after initially trying not to have a meeting, then worked to avoid any statement and then instead of a presidential statement to have only information for the press.

This presidential statement is the strongest reaction of the SA. after resolutions.

The meeting lasted just over an hour and finally only the Special Representative of the Secretary General in Cyprus, Elizabeth Spehar, addressed the members of the Security Council on behalf of the Secretariat, via videoconference. The official moved in the context of Antonio Guterres’ statement, expressing concern about the Turkish action, without condemning it.

Cypriot diplomacy tried to include in the text of the declaration a reference to the condemnation of the actions in Varosi (instead of expressing deep concern), however, the report that had the support of the permanent members “stumbled” in opposition to two non-permanent members (who are not named). As is known, the unanimity of the members of the SA is required for presidential statements.

However, according to a diplomatic source, in his position within the Council, British representative Jonathan Allen would have said that in addition to the SA will follow developments, if necessary he will intervene again.

The attitude observed in the SA is valued as positive. The United States, however, noted that there was no reaction from the State Department and only the embassy in Nicosia issued a statement.
