The “green light” for impose sanctions on Turkey regarding the supply of Russian missile systems S-400, gave the Senate of U.S, after approving the defense budget bill by a large majority.

The bill had previously been approved by House of Representatives. The bill will now go to the White House for President Donald Trump to sign with a more likely veto.

The bill provides measures to delay or prevent the planned withdrawal of US troops from Germany and Afghanistan, which also makes it difficult for the president to deploy military personnel to the southern border with the United States.

Lawmakers also included petitions that would force the president to impose sanctions on Turkey for the purchase of the S-400s, a move that Donald Trump seemed reluctant to take, despite urging lawmakers from both parties.

As four sources, including two US officials, told Reuters yesterday, aware of the problem, the sanctions would target Defense Industry Directorate of the Turkish Presidency of the Republic and its president Ismail Demir.

The sanctions will be imposed by the president of the United States. Donald trump, as newly elected President Joe Biden prepares to take office on January 20.

The US President will have to choose from a list of 12 options CAATSA (Act to treat opponents of the United States through sanctions), ranging from mild to severe.

Trump, who has long emphasized his personal relationship with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has previously resisted bilateral calls from Congress to punish Turkey for its deal with Russia.

Formerly the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan had stated that possible US sanctions for the purchase of the Russian defense system from Turkey would be a sign of disrespect against a major NATO ally.

Ankara has acquired the S-400 anti-aircraft missile system in its midst 2019 and argues that it is not a threat to the allies and will not be integrated into the defense of NATO. Washington says the S-400 is a threat and last year it removed Turkey from its program to build F-35 jets.
