An African-American man has been killed by police in Los Angeles in a general atmosphere of tension and mistrust of law enforcement that has revived since the Jacob Blake case. Police say the man was carrying a weapon.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Office, through Lt. Brandon Dean, gave its own version of events during a press conference. “The man in his 30s was riding a bicycle Monday afternoon when police tried to stop him for violating the traffic code,” Dean said.
What happened
According to authorities, the man “ran away” after leaving his bicycle. The police managed to catch him. It was at that moment, Dean said, that the young African-American “struck one of the officers in the face.”
“The suspect, by the way, threw away a bunch of clothes that he was holding. “Police noticed that a black semiautomatic weapon was inside the pile of clothes,” continued the sergeant.
Then the police opened fire. The man was hit by bullets and died on the spot. “He was in possession of a firearm and attacked a police officer,” Dean insisted, adding that an investigation was already underway.
According to local media, about a hundred people gathered on Monday night at this point, while the anti-racist protest movement has resurfaced in the United States after the incident with a white policeman who shot an African American seven times in the back in Kenosa, Wisconsin.
President Donald Trump, who is expected to arrive today, has no plans to meet with the family of Jacob Blake, who was paralyzed by this apparent police abuse.
