A dramatic showdown with one crocodile had a man in Florida, USA., who chased him underwater to save him her three-month-old cub from her jaws.
Richard Wilbank, 74, ran to the lake in the backyard of his home, dived, lifted the crocodile to the surface and opened his jaws to free Ganer, an arrogant King Charles spaniel.
“We went out and walked across the lake and it was launched out of the water like a rocket. “I never thought an alligator could be so fast,” Richard told CNNi, describing the incident, adding that his adrenaline and instinct “hit” and he automatically jumped into the water.
As he went on to say, holding the crocodile wasn’t that difficult, but opening their jaws was extremely difficult. The crocodile bit his hands and went to the doctor to get him anti-tetanus.
Gunner had an abdominal injury and was recovering from a visit to the vet.
The entire rescue south of Fort Myers was captured on security cameras as a result of a collaboration between the Florida Federation of Wildlife and the fSTOP Foundation.
“We live in a common landscape,” said Meredith Badd of the Federation of Wildlife at WINK, a CNNi subsidiary. “We not only want to tolerate wildlife, we want to thrive with wildlife in a common landscape.”
Wilbanks agrees with this and says he does not want the alligator taken out of the lake or killed. “It’s part of nature and part of our lives,” he says, and he keeps taking Ganer out for a walk, but makes sure to keep him tied up and keep a short distance from the lake shore. “Our pets are like our family,” he concludes.
