Mikael Knapinski, 45, had been dead for 45 minutes after his heart stopped beating before doctors could recover.
Knapinski was hiking in Mount Rainier National Park in Washington, DC, last week when he got lost in sub-zero conditions. According to WPVI-TV, which works with CNNi, a Navy team found him unconscious. He was admitted to the hospital with mechanical support, after doctors decided he was the ideal patient to enter the machine known as ECMO (Extracorporeal Oxygenation Membrane). This specialized machine draws blood from the body and injects it through oxygen before pumping it out again.
“Mikael was unconscious, he was hypothermic and his heart stopped a bit after he was admitted to the intensive care unit. However, he had a pulse and was not seriously injured, so we all immediately thought about ECMO, ”said Dr. Genelle Bandulak’s physician and continued:
“He came back from the dead. It wasn’t a miracle, but it was a science.”
