Another blatant Turkish provocation, with the neighboring country’s authorities refusing to grant a 20-minute overflight permit to the plane carrying Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, which was returning to Greece from Iraq.
The incident occurred on Wednesday night. According to the information, the Greek government plane, after Dendias’ official visit to Iraq, was heading to Athens.
The Turks, apparently for “kapsoni”, when it approached the border between Iraq and Turkey, they refused to give overflight and gave in, only when the Greek side explained that there will be a fuel problem.
In particular, as reported by ERT, The ship “Nefeli” had sailed from Iraq after the end of the visit of Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias in the region. Turkish authorities were notified for the VIP flight and gave approval which, however, withdrew as he approached the border. Intense diplomatic communication ensued and the aircraft was forced to lower altitude and circle until the matter was resolved.
It was a political flight and this action shows how far the Turkish side has escaped in terms of challenges, even in view of the Summit, which will once again not make a decision on sanctions.
