The response of the representative of the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Hami Aksoy, to the intense protest of the Greek Foreign Minister for the new Turkish NAVTEX south of Rhodes was provocative.
During a press conference, Aksoi refuted the Athens announcement, speaking of “baseless claims” by our country in the Eastern Mediterranean.
“Greece’s effort to revive our activities after each NAVTEX is in vain, based on maximalist claims. “Our country will continue the investigations in the region within the framework of our rights derived from International Law,” he characteristically pointed out.

Requires unconditional dialogue
Indeed, Ankara has the audacity to invite our country to an unconditional dialogue, thus essentially succumbing to the effort to generate achievements in the Eastern Mediterranean region.
“Instead of accusing Turkey of unfounded accusations and complaining to third countries, we hope that Greece will refrain from taking measures that increase tensions in the region and help create a climate conducive to negotiations,” Aksoi said.
In this context, he again invited Athens to an “unconditional” dialogue on the situation in the Eastern Mediterranean and on other issues between the two countries.
Erdogan: We will continue the investigation.
In a move that can be described as partially sudden, considering that in the past 48 hours senior Turkish officials, including Tayyip Erdogan, expressed solidarity in Athens over the deadly earthquake in Samos and Izmir. Ankara issued Navtex on Saturday night which expands the presence of Oruc Reis on the Greek continental shelf and announces prospects in the maritime zone southeast of Rhodes.
In this way, Ankara seeks the imposition of commitments to determine the agenda of future negotiations on the Cypriot and Greek-Turkish issue.
This fact was more or less confirmed by the Turkish president himself with his inflammatory statements on Sunday.
“With Oruc Reis, Barbaros and Fatih, Turkey will continue its investigations,” Erdogan said.
The double reaction of Athens and Nicosia
Faced with these facts, therefore, the response of Athens was not limited to the military level, with anti-Navtex version in other words, but also diplomatic, with Nikos Dendias giving instructions for an immediate protest action to the Turkish side.
In a statement, the Greek Foreign Minister notes that “unfortunately Turkey with the issuance of a new illegal Navtex for the period from 1 to 14 November, with which it compromises an area within the Greek continental shelf to carry out illegal seismic surveys , confirms once again that it continues to ignore the fundamental norms of International Law ”, it is stated in the corresponding statement from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs”.
It is an action that “creates more tension in a vulnerable area” and notes that the Turkish side “shows once again that Turkey continues to act against the calls of the International Community, including the Conclusions of the European Council last October, which called for Turkey to stop these actions. “
The Foreign Minister condemns the “criminal behavior” of the Turkish side, stressing that it “removes the prospect of a constructive dialogue” and calls on the other party to “immediately revoke the illegal Navtex it issued.
Apart from the protest order, Nikos Dendias will inform the country’s allies “about the continued provocative Turkish behavior.”
Nicosia also reacted to the new Turkish Navtex, complaining that it is illegal because the coordinates are in its own EEZ and continental shelf, but Ankara rejected it, noting that it does not recognize the Republic of Cyprus and claiming that Nicosia has no jurisdiction in the region.
It was preceded by the issuance of anti-Navtex by the Heraklion station of the Naval Hydrographic Service – as it always does when the Turks have issued Navtex illegally and in an area of our jurisdiction – in which it was noted that the Turkish announcement “is it refers to an illegal activity in an area that overlaps the Greek continental shelf. “
