Turkey: New NOTAM for 13 Greek Islands – Defense

With a NOTAM issued by Turkey, essentially one day before the expiration of NAVTEX for the Oruts Reyes research vessel in the eastern Mediterranean, it calls for the suspension of any military activity in the eastern Aegean islands. These are Rhodes, Kastelorizo, Samothrace, Agios Efstratios, Chios, Psara, Ikaria, Lemnos, Mytilene, Samos, Tilos, Halki, and Patmos. It seems that Ankara, just days before the crucial EU summit where possible sanctions against Turkey will be discussed, is taking a position keeping the tone high.

However, today, the last day of NAVTEX, which had not been renewed until noon on Sunday, Oruts Reyes reached a distance of 10 nautical miles from the island of Strongyli. However, Turkish officials had recently announced that this latest NAVTEX would complete exploration of gas fields in the area. The return of the research vessel is expected to supply and evaluate the data.

Strategic dilemmas for Ankara

According to Deutsche Welle, the question now is whether Oruts Reyes will really leave the region, whether this will be just a strategic move in view of the summit and then the next phase will follow. That is, the shipment of a drilling rig from Turkey or worse, a possible license to drill in the areas of the recent Turkish-Libyan pact.
