An increase, but at a much slower rate, of coronavirus cases in the city in the coming days “shows” the analyzes of the sewage carried out by the AUTh scientific team.
This was stated by the rector of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Nikos Papaioannou, during the special meeting of the municipal council of Thessaloniki on the evolution of the pandemic in the city, according to voria.gr.
Mr. Papaioannou pointed out that in the first ten days of November there was an increase in the viral load in the sewers, but not as aggressive as that observed in the two fortnights of October, which gives optimism that by the end of the month there will be a reduction on the pandemic curve.
The rector stressed that it is absolutely necessary to stop all social contact. “Assuming we have a 25-year-old positive and a 60-year-old positive, the viral load is higher in the youngest. That is why any social contact that is not necessary should stop at least during this period,” he said and expressed the Hope that the results of the measurements for tomorrow and Friday show that a leveling out will probably begin next week, which will be reflected three or four days later. “At the end of November we should get to talk about a downward course of the curve”, stressed.
Mr. Papaioannou also mentioned that the AUTh scientific team is oriented towards the separation of the Urban Complex in 3-4 points, therefore a separate collection of samples is carried out and there is an epidemiological picture of each area.
Regarding this issue, the president of the Panhellenic Medical Association, Athanasios Exadachtylos, said that separate wastewater analysis should result in different actions per region and not different measures. “For example, one area may not have another traffic limit and another does not.” But there should be more specific control with more extensive sampling or other actions. “
The estimate that there will be de-escalation of cases starting at the end of this week and the next signs of de-escalation in ICUs was expressed by the director of the AUTh Environmental Engineering laboratory, Professor Demosthenes Sarigiannis.
The professor also touched on the issue of long-term management of the pandemic, noting that emergency closures could be implemented under restrictions.
