At a scientific event organized by the University of Athens, Sotiris Tsiodras was present at noon on Monday (10/5), who noted, among other things, that “the second wave of the pandemic is ongoing.”
More specifically and referring to the epidemiological data of the coronavirus, Mr. Tsiodras highlighted that in some European countries the second wave of the pandemic is underway. At the same time, he was moderately optimistic about the spread of other respiratory viruses in winter, noting that the measures “may affect the circulation of other respiratory viruses in winter, such as seasonal flu, according to recent data from the southern hemisphere.”
“Global epidemiological data on the release of SARS-Co-2 shows continued epidemic waves around the world, focusing on the American continent. The last month has seen an increase in the incidence of new cases in Europe, which in some countries seems be a true second wave and recovery from the epidemic.
The course of the pandemic probably dates back to the African continent. More than 1 million deaths have been reported worldwide. “The higher than expected increase in mortality remains an important indicator of the fatal outcome of the disease from a virus to which the population has no pre-existing immunity.”
