ESIEA’s Board of Directors sadly announces the death of the journalist, distinguished columnist and international affairs analyst Spyros Kominis, who died last night, after a tough battle with cancer, at the age of 73.

Spyros Kominis was born in Athens in 1947. From a very young age he allowed himself to be conquered by the journalistic profession, in which he saw, with all his youthful spirit and drive, his goals and dreams come true.

Since 1968 he worked systematically, as a foreign news editor, in many Athenian newspapers: “Eleftheros Kosmos”, “Ta Simerina”, “I Acropolis”, “Ethnos”, “Proini”, “Eleftherotypia”, on the private radio “Oh FM” with many acclaimed interviews and on ERT. He wrote articles for some years in the newspaper “Proto Thema” and also collaborated with “Rizo tis Defteras” (Rizospastis sheet Monday afternoon), creating the satirical insert “Satirizos”.

The publication of the newspaper “I Proti” is due to its own inspiration, while it had a decisive and leading role in the publication of the first independent cooperative satirical newspaper “El Ratón”, from the 70s.

Spyros Kominis had a unique talent for discovering and revealing, between the lines, the invisible side of events and for bringing the reader, the listener, the viewer to the truth. It combined irrelevant and completely ignored news from around the world, revealing facts that had escaped the attention of other media. He was uncompromising with his ideas and passionately served real and deep information. He was one of the journalists who predicted the crisis of 2008-2010 and for this charge he was unfortunately censored, provoking, at that time, the strong reaction of ESIEA.

The ESIEA Board of Directors deeply mourns the family and relatives of Spyros Kominis and bids farewell on his last trip to his distinguished colleague, who honored Greek journalism.

The funeral of Spyros Kominis will take place tomorrow, Thursday, December 31 at 1:00 p.m. in the First Cemetery of Athens.
