Those who have already received the first dose of AstraZeneca and are under the age of 60 should be vaccinated with the mRNA vaccine, recommends the Standing Committee on Vaccination (Stiko) for Germany.
The second dose, according to the Commission, should be administered twelve weeks after the first, as there are still no studies on the safety of combining two different vaccines. This recommendation will be valid until new scientific data is available. Currently, the mRNA vaccines approved in Germany are BioNTech / Pfizer and Moderna.
Last Tuesday, following new cases of thromboembolism, the Commission issued a directive stating that the AstraZeneca vaccine should now be administered to people over 60 years of age.
The second channel of the German public television ZDF, however, said on Friday that the chancellor was aware of the decision that Stiko would make since last Friday, but Angela Merkel did not mention anything during her television interview last Sunday. A government spokesman said in a statement that the Chancellor, “taking into account the federal scope of the decision, first consulted the Ethics Council and the Leopoldina Federal Academy of Sciences.” Since Stiko informed the government when its recommendation was issued on Tuesday, 300,000 people have been vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine.
