Few actors in ancient Greek cinema corresponded to the term “beauties.”
Undoubtedly one of them was the impressive Mema Stathopoulou, whose career may have lasted only eight years, but one movie would be enough to leave her mark on the viewer’s memory.
The woman with the characteristic almond eyes, intense gaze and fuzzy charm is one of the most recognizable blondes in theater and cinema.
Gisela Daly could have been named the Greek “Brigitte Bardot”, but if anyone contributed more to the French superstar, it was, due to her characteristics, the actress from Patras who sadly passed away prematurely, at the age of 57.
His tragic life
Mema Stathopoulou, who was christened Dimitra, distinguished herself in both great and fateful female roles, literally embodying the model of the erotic fantasy of thousands of men.
He starred or appeared, according to his own statement, in 39 films. Some of the most famous are “The Pervert”, “The girl with rage”, “A guy in the living room”, “An African Onassis” and “The bullets do not go back”. The first two were among the many she played alongside Thanos Livaditis, with whom she was a couple for several years and in life.
Besides her appearance, Stathopoulos was undoubtedly one of the most educated actresses, something she owed to her long-term involvement in athletics. She was an athlete from Panachaiki, with important honors in high jump and the reason she left Patras for Athens after finishing school was to take an exam at the Gymnastics Academy. But when he arrived in Athens, he decided to enroll in the Drama School of the National Theater, changing his career plan. At the same time he attended acting classes at the Katselis School of Hair.
He completed his studies at the age of 22 (1963) and barely a year later made his debut in the theater, along with the great Dimitris Horn and in the play “The double-headed eagle.” As you have said, the first professional role of your career, alongside a theater legend, was the most special moment of your career.
In the same year he began to act in the cinema, while when he became famous he took several photos for the magazines of the time (Romance, Fantazio, Vendetta). 1969’s “A Dude in the Living Room” was one of his biggest hits. She played a rich and spoiled girl, the daughter of a shipowner, who is saved from certain death by a fisherman, a role played by Giannis Voglis.
They did not marry Thanos Livaditis. Stathopoulou walked the steps of the church in 1975 with industrialist Dimitris Marousis. She was only 34 years old, but decided to retire from the art world to dedicate herself to the role of mother. She had two children, while after their separation in the 80s, she returned to Patras and went into business, opening a women’s clothing boutique.
In 1997, the health problems began. The battle against cancer lasted two years and turned out to be uneven on October 17, 1999. When Mema was “rushed” to close her eyes for the last time, as she had been forced to leave the scene.
Six years after her death, the curse that haunted her passed to her family, her daughter, who was only 24 years old, was lost in a car accident.
