A 25-year-old mother and her 46-year-old partner, who were referred to trial, remain accused of systematically causing intense physical and mental pain to a minor victim.

A 5-year-old boy was allegedly tortured by his mother and partner to punish him for being naughty. The couple was referred to the Thessaloniki Mixed Jury Court while the child is currently in the hands of a foster family.

It is said that a 46-year-old Egyptian is the natural author, who after his implication in another case of illegal immigration of migrants managed to escape and is wanted. He beat the minor and burned him with a cigarette in front of the eyes of the 25-year-old mother who stood by, according to the indictment.

The first was prosecuted for “methodically inflicting severe physical and mental pain on a minor victim on a continuous basis” for “illegal domestic violence and constant threats.” The second is accused of “direct synergy in intense physical and mental pain methodically induced to a minor victim on a continuous basis.”

According to the indictment, it turned out that the couple punished the minor in the attic with hookahs when he did not obey him while also removing his underwear and threatened to burn his genitals for not obeying him. The mother did not react and tolerated her son’s abuse.

Aggravated past

The following is mentioned in the referral panel of the Council of Criminal Courts of Thessaloniki: The accused mother, born in 1995, was deprived of a child from a natural family environment. Until the age of 17, under the supervision of the Juvenile Prosecutor of Thessaloniki, he was housed in the institution for the protection of minors, under the care of an adoptive mother.

While still a minor, she became pregnant outside of marriage by an unknown partner at EPAL where she was studying. Due to her pregnancy, she was admitted to an institution for single mothers. The result of the previous superficial relationship was the birth of an unidentified child (father unknown), in 2012. As of the ninth month of the minor’s life, the accused and her son settled in an apartment owned by a Greek couple who It was delivered free of charge. The wife of the couple, according to grtimes.gr, knew the accused for many years, as she worked as a special educator in the first institution for the protection of minors.

The couple (who had two children) became closely associated with the accused during this time, provided her with systematic psychological support and later became the godmother of her son. In fact, she actively participated in the development of the child, as well as with her own actions this enrolled since the 2016/17 school year in kindergarten and attended other extracurricular activities (pool, choir).

In 2017, the defendant had an affair with her co-defendant, an Egyptian citizen who was 21 years older (born in 1974) and had a family with 5 children in his home country. Since then, they all lived together, the defendant and the 5-year-old boy, in an apartment in Sykies, Thessaloniki.

Teacher observation

During his studies in the aforementioned kindergarten, the school staff noticed a systematic neglect of the child by his mother. The child often looked dirty, did not have the proper food, stayed in school even after the end of the program because his mother was late or did not come to pick him up, etc.

In December 2017, the boy’s kindergarten teacher noticed that the 5-year-old had bruises inside his legs, which she told her were caused by the bite of his mother’s partner. He also told his teacher that he often hits him when he is not calm, with his mother’s consent. Similar traces of abuse came to the attention of the boy’s godmother (the couple’s wife) who repeatedly located cigarette burns on his body, which she photographed from time to time.

Complaint and police investigation

Thus, the Sub-Directorate for the Protection of Minors of the Security Directorate of Thessaloniki was informed, where the child testified that: When his mother’s partner is naughty, he grabs his neck with both hands and hits his head against the wall. She often hits him on the face and thighs with her hands. He has burned it with a cigarette in his hands. This violent behavior is common and develops in front of his mother, who does not get involved.

He even claimed that during the Christmas 2017 and New Year 2018 holidays he was beaten by the defendant with blows to the face and thighs and burns to his hands with a cigarette. This, according to grtimes.gr, was confirmed by the forensic examination of the minor when signs of abuse were found.

At the same time, the former (mother and partner) were arrested in the spontaneous process for their involvement in a network of trafficking of third-country nationals without the right to enter the country while they were accused of a crime. At the same time, the judicial authorities ordered the defendant’s removal from custody of the minor and ordered his godmother to be extradited.

Apologies

In his apology to the investigator, for the case of abuse, the defendant denied the accusation of complicity in the alleged facts and invoked in principle that the bodily injuries of his son were common due to minor daily accidents of children his age. It further stated that the abuse allegation was due to the intention of the contractors’ couple to extract their son for adoption to their childless partner.

Her co-defendant, as a natural perpetrator, did not apologize because she is on the run after being prosecuted in the illegal immigration case. An arrest warrant is pending against her, while the mother was subject to the restrictive condition of being prohibited from leaving the country.
