MEGA talks to the lifeguard who for more than 6 hours stood next to a young man from Cephalonia who was struggling with the raging waves on the island’s Myrtos beach.
Elias Papageorgopoulos describes all the dramatic moments while revealing that there were moments when he feared for his life.
Raging waves on Kefalonia’s Myrtos Beach hit two men trying to stay above sea level.
The height of the waves exceeds three meters and the intensity of the winds even reaches seven Beauforts.
Dozens of civilians look on in disbelief and helplessly wait for the navy helicopter to rescue the two men.
“I thought I was going to die”
Elias Papageorgopoulos, the lifeguard who selflessly fell into the stormy sea to help the young Cephalonian, speaks to MEGA and reveals that despite his upbringing, he feared for his life.
“It was the first time that I thought I was playing and that I was going to die. Drown. As we tried to get out but a wave came, I was looking at it with my head held high.
Too high and brought us a bit of a fall. Let’s go out, we drank water. Then another water came over us out of nowhere, I don’t know how it happened. We would have drowned a little more.
It all started when the young man from Kefalonia entered the sea despite the ban. When the lifeguard Elias Papageorgopoulos arrived at the place and without thinking twice he entered the sea to find himself next to the person whose life was hanging by a thread.
“We had a rescue plan to do, but at that moment I saw that the boy was in a state of fury and I said that I would go directly. I wanted to go in and calm him because things were difficult. It was at night, if he sat there alone, of course it would be fatal. “
Dramatic rescue
Six hours later, the SIKORSKY helicopter from the Navy arrived at the scene. Now even seconds matter, as the men are exhausted.
The rescuer, without wasting a moment, put both people into the helicopter.
“It just came to our notice then. Why shouldn’t we be anxious if we were anxious? Things were much more difficult. So we said what everyone is studying, how Cephalonia sees us, where are you from. Simple everyday problems” .
The young Cephalonian remains in the hospital and is expected to be discharged in the next few days.
