How many times have you not listened to a song and are you sure it speaks of some great love? For an unsatisfied love? Or who considers himself to be talking about something ordinary, every day, but in the end his lyrics speak of something great and unique?
Composers often trick listeners into telling an untold story. Putting a big secret in the lyrics so that even if someone sings it, they think they are talking about something else
It has happened many times in the past and it is a fact that it will happen many more in the future. Each time, however, the real reasons why a song it will come out, people will be surprised. And the impact will be such that no matter how much you associate a song with a specific meaning or feeling, from now on it will never be the same again and surely every time you listen to it you will remember the story behind it.
Something similar happens with his song “What a sacrifice” Angelas Dimitriou. For decades, the popular song of the Lady of Greece kept the story hidden behind the lyrics. He first told the truth a few years ago (which he repeated a few days ago) and since then the nature of the song has changed forever …
The birth of a star and the difficult first years
Angeliki Kiourtsaki was born on August 14, 1954 in Peristeri, Attica. The daughter of a very poor family, she was forced to drop out of school to get a job and help her own people.
One of his first jobs was in a large textile factory of the time. When he was still young, he discovered that he had a beautiful voice and before he knew it, at just 14 years old, he took the stage for the first time. Like in a Greek movie, an agent listens to her and, somehow, things start out and get away with it.
His career actually began in 1970 when he began appearing in the “Beta Beta” entertainment center. Two years later, she “leaves” Angeliki Kiourtsaki behind her and becomes Angela Dimitriou.
In 1974 he collaborated with them Dionysiou Army, Poly Panou, Rita Sakellariou, Litsa Diamanti, Manoli Angelopoulos and others.
The first one who really believes in his talent and popular voice is the great one. Vasilis TSITSANIS, with whom he collaborated in 1976 and 1977 in the “Harama” store.
In 1976 he met Katerina Stanisi with whom he collaborated and in 1978 while he was in Thessaloniki the director of a record company proposed to him to make his first album that takes “flesh and bones” in 1979 and is titled by his artistic pseudonym.
In 1980 he made his first gold record (Why arrive late?), In 1985 he made his first platinum record (What a sacrifice) and in 1992 he made his first double platinum record (Fire on Saturdays: 1982–1992 ¡Ten años de canto )!
Her singing career continues to this day, having already collaborated with composers such as Christos Nikolopoulos, Stamatis Spanoudakis, Lakis Papadopoulos, Phoebus, and others. He has sung with Anna Vissi, Katerina Stanisi, Rita Sakellariou, Vicky Moscholiou, Vassilis Karras, George Margaritis, Stamatis Gonidis, Zafeiris Melas, Lefteri Pantazi and others. During his career he has highlighted big names in the music scene such as Notis Sfakianakis, Katerina Kouka, George Alkaios, Valantis and others.
Angela Dimitriou has sold more than 2,500,000 records abroad, while in Greece and Cyprus album sales have reached 1,300,000. She has been distinguished as one of the most commercial singers of the last 50 years.
The sad story behind the song “what a sacrifice”
As already mentioned above in 1985, he makes his first platinum record. Inside is the song “what a sacrifice!” From the moment the specific song was first heard, it was considered the “absolute anthem of the female capsule.”
As the night progresses, I meditate on you.
As soon as I think of you, I go crazy.
[…]
As the night progresses, I think of you.
I know the other holds you and I’m going crazy.
[…]
And I want to come and grab you from the other
ask him with tears in his eyes
with what right do I take you out of me
And what a sacrifice, what a sacrifice she has made for you.
Surely, when you hear it, your mind will probably go to an infidelity story with the male of the case playing on a double board. The lyrics, after all, help to reach this conclusion. Or maybe not;
The truth is, no. This song is not a love song, nor does it mention any infidelity stories. It may still be one of the strongest pieces in Lady’s repertoire, but the truth is harsher. The song (whose composer is Manos Koufianakis and composer is Haris Kaloudis, who passed away in 2015) speaks of a mother’s desperate love for her son, specifically Angela for her son, Vangelis, who did not grow up close to her.
“We wrote it together with Manos Koufianakis and Haris Kaloudis at Haris’s house at 7 in the morning, drinking a lot of wine. I was telling my story and wanted to have my son by my side. Everyone thought at first it was a love song, but this song is written for my son, Vangelis. I had to ask this woman “what right do you have to take my son, while I had him in my womb for nine months”, Dimitriou herself had previously revealed in an interview, saying that she was forced to give birth to her son When it was only 8 days for an aunt who promised to raise him.
“My son and I went through many stages where we were not well and he was right about that. The mother is not the one who gives birth. The mother is the one that grows. My aunt forgives the child. She raised him and breastfed him. Up to 24-25 years. By then he knew that I was his first cousin. I told him like in a fairy tale. Like a fairy tale: “I tell her from time to time, many years ago, that I was a skinny girl who got pregnant. Went and worked on Crete. Raise money. She returned and gave birth to a boy. This little boy couldn’t get along with her because he had a problem because of his father. This little girl is called Angeliki. ”
I say I’ll stay now or he’ll slap me. I told him that my son, your mother did not die. Your mother lives and it is me. Asked me to do DNA test, have the exact details and tell him who the father is. I tell him, of course: “Your father’s name is Antonis Kyriakou. He’s a former singer. First phone number. And we called him. Talk to him and he went looking for him.”
