In the last week there have been upward trends in the growth rate of the coronavirus epidemic, said Gikas Majorkinis, emphasizing that the dynamics of the pandemic in Attica is disproportionate to the rest of the country, since it now represents half of the total cases. Today EODY announced 460 cases in the last 24 hours, which is a negative record for our country. Of these, 207 were located in Attica, while 114 were in a cannery in Skydra, Pella.
Despite the extreme situation in Attica, Professor G. Majorkinis stressed during today’s briefing on the course of the pandemic that the scenario of a dramatic increase in cases appears to have been suspended for the time being in Greece, but as he explained “to international level it is expected that the cases will increase as people return to the interior something that will happen and in our country from the end of October].
As the professor said, in Greece the number of patients with mechanical support is increasing in the last week. Specifically, he said that last week it was below 70 and now it is above 80.
Referring to Attica, he said that it still remains an area with epidemiological burden regarding the coronavirus, from the current cases, 207 are registered there.
The professor also referred to the pro-transmission mainly of asymptomatic carriers of the coronavirus and explained that this course can only change if we continue to follow the measurements and use the mask while maintaining distances.
“It is too early for the Commission to propose additional measures”
Referring to the possibility of additional measures, Mr Majorkinis said that these will be proposed by the Commission, if it deems it necessary. “But it is still too early for that,” he said.
Asked about the percentage of asymptomatic cases in the total of reported cases, he said that this is something that is changing and spoke of “a dynamic situation that is difficult to describe internationally.” However, he said that asymptomatic carriers of the coronavirus range between 50% and 80%.
In fact, he added that in some structures in our country, 100% of the cases were asymptomatic. His estimate is that the coronavirus since its appearance in our country has infected more than 100,000 people, “it may be 150,000,” he said characteristically, adding that herd immunity in our country is extremely low, when we would like to have virus immunity more than 50% of the population “.
