That day in 1974 that his agent Mossad codenamed D landed on Lebanon On a flight from Europe, he knew very well that nothing would be the same in his life.
Having been ordered to become his “shadow” Ali Hassan Salame, the man who was the instigator of the massacre of Israeli athletes in Munich, risked his life.
The order he had received was clear: “Keep him close, keep us informed, but don’t make personal contact with him,” were Svi Rami’s words. The Mossad commander was absolute on this issue. Now that they had located the man they were looking for, they would not stop looking. No, at least not until the time is right to mount a Salameh assassination operation in the heart of Beirut, something very daring for the “hawks” of the Mossad.
D had no intention of deviating from the orders he had received. Acting in hiding, with false documents and status, he began to travel and stay for long periods of time in the following years between Damascus and Beirut.
He watched Salame closely without realizing it and spoke about the operation 35 years later on a spy TV show called “Hit List.” His face was not revealed for obvious reasons, but what he said was a revealing prelude to the lonely life of a Mossad commercial agent.
Friend of Israel’s number one enemy
“Being in Beirut for so long and your loneliness brings great mental, emotional and psychological stress. Such that suddenly a mistake can be made and revealed”. And the revelation only meant one thing: arrest and death by summary process.
That’s why D immersed himself forever in his new self, calling the whole situation “positive schizophrenia” and emphasizing that his covering was his new life: “If I didn’t believe it first, the next wouldn’t believe it either.”
He settled in the international hotel “Beirut” for a very good reason. Ali Hassan Salame, known by the nickname “Red Prince”, used to go to the hotel gym every day to keep himself in very good physical condition.
D just had to look at him and hear what he had to say chatting with his bodyguards, while training since Salame talked a lot. Following the order not to make contact with the terrorist, he did not expect Salame to be the one to finally approach him one afternoon.
“I was already in Beirut for six months and I was doing sit-ups alone in the gym, when I heard a calm voice behind me telling me that I was not doing the exercise well.”
Salame showed him the right way, they introduced themselves and started talking about wind and water, about whether D p. Eg learn squash to play together.
The Mossad agent found out and these games began to form a friendly relationship as the days passed, something Svi Rami was immediately informed of.
Although he was concerned for the safety of his agent, the “Institute” commander gave his approval to continue D’s contact with the man many viewed as his successor. Yasser Arafat in the PLO.
“He was smart, strong, determined and intelligent,” the former Israeli agent revealed in a personal interview, adding: “We had a lot in common.”
But he knew his new “friend” had orchestrated the murder of 11 Israeli athletes in Munich and that is why “he deserved it and had to die. So there was no doubt. “
From parties to business
D receives an invitation to dinner at Salame’s house, who guides him everywhere and introduces him to his wife Georgina Ritz, former Miss Universe, who succumbed to his charm.
After each invitation, he always sends a lengthy report to Mossad headquarters, having attached himself to a man he is going to kill at any given time.
“He was both a friend and a mortal enemy, and that’s not easy, since deep down you know that this man must die.”
Salame almost always wants him by his side, gives him gifts, takes him to a party and arranges for him to do it with his wife’s sister. D enjoys, but at the same time studies the methods of extermination of Salameh and proposes some of them to the Mossad, which in October 1978 approved one.
Knowing thanks to D the daily itinerary that he followed the “red prince” when he left his house, they decide to plant a car with explosives in one of the three parking lots after a mandatory right turn that his car would make.
The Mossad sends another agent to Beirut, Erika Chambers, who rents an apartment across from the parking lot where the trapped vehicle would be parked.
D travels to Jordan under the pretext of a short vacation, but meets a group from the Mossad, who gives him a large cabinet containing the explosives.
The return is verified twice on the border between Jordan-Syria and Syria-Lebanon, But customs, despite asking about the furniture, are not looking for it. It arrives in Beirut and a few days later a third Mossad agent arrives to place it and detonate the explosives, while delivering a detonator to Chambers. From the headquarters of the Service comes the green light for business.
The explosion and the return
The operation will take place on January 22, 1979 and the explosives will not be fired by D, but by Erika Chambers, who is asked if he can do it. No one knows if the friendship he developed with Salame played a role in this decision, nor was he asked on the show if he would press the button.
The two cars, in the front were the four bodyguards of Salameh, they left, following the route given by D to the Mossad. He followed the route until they entered the curve and then the Erika it detonated 100 kilograms of explosives, rocking the vehicles in the air.
The bodyguards were killed instantly and the “Red Prince” of “Black September” succumbed to his serious injuries shortly thereafter, in a Beirut hospital.
D, Chambers and the third agent immediately left the Lebanese city and shortly after 24 hours were back in Israel, where the celebrations for the death of Salameh had not stopped at the headquarters of the “Institute”.
Even today, the anonymous spy is considered a myth in Israel’s notorious secret service, as he managed to catch the most wanted terrorist.
That is to say, the man the Mossad had marked as the number one target in the operation with the code name “The Wrath of God,” the one with whom it became attached knowing it would kill him and then have to live with it.
