Hooked on the edge, perhaps, of the largest ravine in the world, that of Vikos, the Agia Paraskevi Monastery is located in Monodendri, in one of the most beautiful and traditional apart by Zagori.

Fully harmonized with the surrounding environment, it looks like a continuation of the towering vertical rocks just above the Vikos Gorge. Today the desert monastery is less than a kilometer from the town’s main square and is one of its most important attractions.

With more than 600 years of life, the monastery was built in 1412 by Mr. Michael Voevoda and is a monastery-fortress, since it has an arched door, stone buildings, cells, well, hatch, etc. Everything is characterized by the elaborate stone construction, a characteristic element of traditional architecture throughout Zagorochoria.

Today, from the whole of the monastery, which is preserved in good condition, you can see the Catholicos, the cells, the abbot and some auxiliary spaces. It is worth mentioning that from the monastery there is a path dug into the rock that leads to the “hermitage” and the “little houses”, places of practice and worship of God for centuries.

During the Turkish occupation the monastery and the adjacent caves in the rocks, served as a safe refuge for the inhabitants of the area.

A landmark for the monastery and the breathtaking view of the wild beauty of the Greek “Grand Canyon” which is in itself a reason to visit the monastery.
