The Office of Legal Affairs of the United Nations Secretariat published a few hours ago on the official website of the UN Directorate for Ocean Affairs and Maritime Law the Greece-Egypt agreement on the delimitation of the Exclusive Economic Zone between the two states that they had signed on August 6.

With this act, which was carried out in record time, it was registered with the United Nations and then the Agreement that our country signed with Egypt four months ago was published.

The significance of this post lies not only in the fact that the Greek-Egyptian agreement itself was published, but that it was done in a very short time, despite the fact that the president of the UN General Assembly is the Turkish Volkan Bozkir.

The speed with which the agreement was signed and published together with the delay in the publication of the “Turkish-Libyan memorandum” is the result of many months of effort by Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias, who is in regular contact with the UN Secretary General. , Antonio Guterres. It should be noted that the Foreign Minister met three times with the senior Portuguese official in recent months, twice in Geneva and more recently in New York last September.

It is also noted that this post is the first to be carried out, in relation to the agreements for the delimitation of maritime zones between Greece and a neighboring country, always based on the Law of the Sea, for four decades. The agreement with Italy will be published as soon as it enters into force.
