A hallmark of everyday culture is for each city the way in which the life and health of the homeless are protected and the municipality of Athens has set the bar high, it is pointed out in a relevant announcement on the occasion of the International Day of the Helpless. Animals that is tomorrow April 4.
“The effort to improve the living conditions of the homeless in Athens does not stop and continues with actions at various levels, day by day, creating a safer environment for four-legged friends who are homeless,” said the release.
For this, the first modern hostel of the municipality will be operating in Votanikos, where a functional space for temporary accommodation has already been created, with a capacity of 90 places, with a large patio and complete equipment, so that homeless people can live in decent and safe conditions. .
The space that is housed is guarded 24 hours a day, while five people work daily both for cleaning and for socializing the dogs. The latter is done in collaboration with volunteer trainers and ordinary citizens who love animals.
In addition, in the shelter there is a room for setting up a room in the house (with furniture, etc.), in order to familiarize the dogs with the environment of the home, so that they are as “prepared” as possible when they are your eternal home.
The temporary homeless shelter in the municipality of Athens will be named “Socrates’ Refuge” in memory of one of the most iconic stray dogs in the center of Athens who lost his life in an accident. In fact, inside the shelter, the Urban Act team and the artist “Life in Color” have made a graffiti with Socrates, as a tribute to all the homeless animals on the street.
“Socrates’ refuge is a refuge for the soul of all of us. It is a prerequisite for every modern and at the same time human city. It is another effort we make to change the lives of stray animals in Athens. We do it with many actions of affection and love but also with structures like this. “Your protection and health is the basis of the culture of daily life and hygiene in all our neighborhoods,” said the mayor of Athens, Costas Bakogiannis, after his visit to the animal shelter on the occasion of tomorrow’s World Stray Animal Day.
The main objective of the shelter is that our homeless friends soon find a hospitable home, a new family to take care of them.
For this reason, the website www.animalscityofathens.gr has been created, through which citizens are informed about animals for adoption.
But the creation of the shelter is only part of the puzzle of the municipality’s actions for the stray animals of the capital. The people of the Department of Urban Fauna of the municipality, as well as dozens of volunteers are every day in every corner of the city to sterilize, care for and take care of our four-legged friends. “To date, 420 dogs and 70 cats have been adopted and 1,160 neutered, while 614 dogs and 1,400 kittens have received medical attention,” the statement said.
Likewise, the Urban Fauna pages of the Athens City Council have been created on Facebook and Animals_CityofAthens on Instagram, increasing the forms of citizen communication with the Service, as well as the Volunteer Registry where 600 volunteers have already registered.
Finally, the municipal authority is implementing a program to install houses for stray cats, which is gradually spreading to more and more neighborhoods in the city. 16 houses have already been installed, as well as 60 feeders and showers, so that stray animals can protect themselves from the cold and find food and water on a daily basis.
