The church reacts: We do not agree with the decision of the closed Epiphany temples

The Holy Permanent Synod requires the government to keep everything agreed before the holidays, with its announcement.

During a press conference, the representative of the DIS, metropolitan of Ilio, Acharnes and Saint Petersburg, Mr. Athenagoras, declared: “The Churches will be open to us. Let the government do what it wants. ”His Excellency also said that the government had not previously informed the DIS about the decision to close the churches for Epiphany.

“Let everyone assume their responsibilities,” he stressed and expressed his protest and dissatisfaction with the possibility of having police officers outside the temples.

According to the DIS announcement, the church:

1. It does not agree with the measures of the new Government on the operation of the Holy Temples, insists on what was originally agreed with the State and orders that the Holy Temples remain open to the participation of the faithful in the Divine Liturgy and the Sanctification of the waters within its Holy Temples. Feast of the Epiphany, as agreed and printed in KYA No. Δ1α / ΓΠ.οικ. 80588 / 12.15.2020 (Government Gazette BD 5509). It asks the State to fully respect the previous KYA without further problems, taking into account that during the celebration of Christmas and New Year and the other days of the Twelfth Day in the thousands of Parish Churches of the Church of Greece with the care of the Most Reverend Metropolitans local and venerable Sanitary Measures to limit the spread of the coronavirus.

2. Send a letter of protest to the Greek Government, considering dialogue as the only means of resolving issues relating to the relations of the State with the religious communities that exist in the Greek State.

3. Calls on both the leaders of the European Union and the Greek Government to take the necessary measures to ensure that a sufficient number of approved vaccines are immediately supplied to citizens. No one has the right to serve the purposes of other people in the face of such an important issue as overcoming the pandemic, because the right to health belongs to everyone.

4. It renews its previous Decision so that during the current period the position of the Holy Synod before the media is expressed only by its representative, His Eminence the Metropolitan of Ilio, Acharnes and Saint Petersburg, Mr. Atenágoras.
