The Chinese robotic ship Chang’e 5, which left the Moon on Thursday after a two-day stay on its surface and collecting samples, managed to do one more thing: “plant” the official Chinese flag on the Moon.
According to the China National Space Agency (CNSA), which released the photo taken by Chang’e 5, the cloth flag has been specially processed to withstand the extreme temperatures on the Moon. Of course, due to the lack of air on the moon, the flag does not wave, but is fixed and immobile.
China becomes the second country to put its flag on the Moon after the United States (USSR-Russia, which was second to the Moon, had not done anything similar). If the lunar sample from Chang’e 5 successfully reaches Earth, China will become the third country in the world to bring rocks and dust from the surface of the Moon. The capsule with the valuable sample is expected to land in the Inner Mongolia region of northern China.
