In the 16 arrests
Two young Swiss men, aged 18 and 24, were arrested today in Winterthur, near Zurich, in northern Switzerland, as part of the investigation into the terrorist attack in Vienna, local police said.
“The police investigations made it possible to identify the Swiss, aged 18 and 24. The two men were arrested in Winterthur on Tuesday afternoon, in coordination with the Austrian authorities,” said the statement issued by the Zurich canton police. .
“The possible connection of the two detainees with the alleged perpetrator of the attacks is the subject of ongoing investigations by the competent authorities,” he added.
By noon Tuesday, Austrian police had arrested 14 people in connection with the main suspect in the Vienna attack.
The perpetrator is an ISIS follower
An Islamic State supporter was one of the identified perpetrators as Austrian Interior Minister Carl Nehammer said at a press conference Tuesday morning.
The German newspaper BILD even publishes the photo of a man who allegedly announced the attack through Instagram. The account in question has now been deleted and the Austrian authorities are investigating its authenticity.
The man in black holds in one hand a Zastava M70 pistol, a pistol and a large knife.
Meanwhile, the Interior Ministry leaked that the perpetrator is a 20-year-old man who was born and raised in the Austrian capital (of Albanian origin from North Macedonia) and was known to the intelligence services because he was one of the 90 Islamists Austrians who wanted to travel to Syria.
In fact, as revealed by the Austrian Foreign Ministry, Carl Nehammer, the young jihadist had been imprisoned after he tried to travel to Syria to join the Islamic State organization, the Austrian government announced today.
Nehamer confirmed the information transmitted by the APA news agency that the perpetrator had been sentenced to 22 months in prison in April 2019. In December 2019, he was released prematurely due to his young age.
The suspect misled the denationalization program and gave the impression that he had joined, while doing the exact opposite, the Austrian interior minister said.
