In a final decision for the new torpedoes for Type 214 submarines, it appears that the PN and is about the purchase of 32 (the initial requirement of the PN was 51 torpedoes) of German DM2A4 for 112 million euros.
The Prime Minister’s visit to the Type 214 “Katsonis” submarine on October 28 was not accidental and is related to the decision on torpedoes. The DM2A4 from the German STN Atlas is an evolution of the successful DM2A3 torpedo from the same company.
This is a 533mm wired guide torpedo. and it has a double function, that is, it can attack both surface ships and submarines. The DM2A4 guide is a combination of wired guide (via fiber optic, making it the first operational fiber optic torpedo) and active and passive sonar and magnetic bulletproof vests.
The DM2A4 is powered by a battery powered electric motor. It has a head of 260 kg. Highly explosive PBX (Polymer-bonded explosive) polymer-bonded explosive, with a power equivalent to 460 kg. TNT, although depending on the version it is capable of reaching a maximum speed of 50 knots (92.6 / ha) and a range of up to 50 km.
